CD | Phoenix | WOLFGANG AMADEUS PHOENIX

phoenix from V2 and loyaute

It really shits me that people aren’t familiar with this band. Phoenix played here two years ago with the Pixies and Jarvis Cocker; still no one in Adelaide went to see them. Hence, we haven’t had any V-Fest side shows back here, and quite frankly we don’t deserve it. I flew to the Gold Coast for that line up Godammit! Anyway…

This new album is a fine demonstration of indie-pop-rock. It’s both mature and fun; you can dance to it without feeling the cringe of jumping on any bandwagon (MGMT?). Phoenix deliver a sound which captures the influences of Daft Punk and Cassius, but all packaged up with smooth guitars and under spoken drums. The fact it plays a little too similarly to their last album, It’s never been like that, would be my only beef. Right down to the long instrumental track chucked in the middle of the playlist.

Still, I thought the last album was nothing short of musical heroin, so a follow up in the same vein (cough), is still going to impress.
