MADELEINE PARRY discovers the freedom to choose the jobs you want is a wonderful reality.
Does the word FREELANCE evoke a sense of mystique and adventure to you? Does it entice you like the Egyptian desert – you’re kinda scared of the lack of water, prospect of trudging through piles of sand and night-time visits from camels; but know you’d be really happy and proud of yourself when you’re there, braving it alone?
Well, here’s the deal. uuu spoke to three successful creative freelancers to dispel all the myths, and what we found is that heading out on your own doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in for a rough, camel-y time ahead. A freelance career can see you financially well-off, it can challenge you artistically, and you can earn a living doing exactly what you love. The only catch? 
You have to be really good at what you do.
The freelancers.
Jennie Groom, a commercial freelance photographer, was expressing milk when I called her for an interview. She gives a little giggle. “I’ve had another baby,” she says. “Jake is three months old and I had five or six weeks off and I’m picking and choosing jobs now.” Jennie is a multi award winning portrait photographer whose book women@work has won wide acclaim. Tonight though, her husband is going to look after Jake while she goes out to do a job. And that’s what Jennie initially began freelancing for, so she could spend more time with her kids. And it’s still working pretty well nine years on, “I only have to do a couple of jobs per week,” she says, “it really fits in with mothering”.
Adam Johnson, founder of creative agency Xtra Shiny, gives some sound advice: “If you look at it as just a money-making exercise you’ll get no work”. You’ve got to love what you do. Adam cut his teeth in the advertising industry before going solo early last year, a move that he decided was for his creative well-being. “People like myself, we’ve turned our back on a ‘job’ for the sake of freedom of mind and time, and to be able to work under our own conditions,” he says. And work under his own conditions he does – “if I choose to come in at 3 in the afternoon and work until 11 at night,” he smiles, “that’s ok”. Adam’s credentials are mighty impressive. He’s won stacks of awards, and recently worked with ad agency Clemenger’s on the awesome Pimp My Kettle campaign.
Tom Barnes was a freelancer from the word go. A freelance recording engineer and record producer, he cites the advantages of working for himself as a) the tangible possibility of moving to Hawaii (“no one could stop me. I’m not planning on it… but I could”), and b) being able to choose jobs that interest him. Sometimes he goes to the pub, and, when he sees a band he really likes he approaches them. “It usually works out great,” he says, “because you end up in a situation where the band are happy they’re working with someone who’s enthusiastic about the music, and I have a great time because I love the band, that’s why I asked to do their record”. Tom has produced records for the likes of PNAU and Leader Cheetah as well as the explosive new offering from the Transatlantics.
It all sounds well and good, but what’s the secret? I sure don’t have a genie to make clients appear and cash flow forth from my skills. So how do these successful individuals do it?
How to make freelance work.
Well, none of them advertise – they’re all just really good at what they do. The only thing a freelancer can do to get employment is to create work that can’t be ignored – if you build it, they will come. Sounds fair – but how do clients find you in the first place? Jennie kindly enlightens us to the devastatingly simple answer, “it’s really just word of mouth 
and getting to know people”. Adam agrees. “For me, the Internet doesn’t play a single part. I’ve never really promoted myself as a ‘freelancer’. The work I’ve gotten has been through people I’ve known in the industry.”
Coming from that industry background into freelancing means your connections are already pre-packaged – but what about people like Tom, who decided to work for himself without a stint in the music industry? “Job security can be an issue when you start,” he admits. “It takes a while to build up a solid client base and that can be pretty disheartening. I definitely remember thinking, how the fuck am I actually going to make this work?”
For Tom, making it work meant sticking through that tough patch – once you’ve established a few contacts and shown that you’re reliable and friendly, things tend to snowball. Tom started by mixing live shows. There was a shortage of live mixers around when he finished school. He was good and eventually, through getting to know bands, he started engineering and producing their records. He loves music and now gets to make it almost every day.
Although he is freelance, Tom mostly works with one studio. “Scoring the job of looking after Mixmasters was definitely about the biggest break I could have asked for starting up,” he says. Tom impressed the studio so much that they asked him to come around pretty much all the time. It was like having a little black book of clients dropped in his lap, “Pretty handy”. The situation suits him fine. His good relationship with Mixmasters means he’s plenty busy, but has the freedom to work for other studios and even travel around.
The technical stuff.
Let’s be honest: who doesn’t want to do something they enjoy, do it well and get paid for it? But running your own business? Surely that’s complicated. For Tom, becoming his own man was a two-step process, “I got an ABN and I bought a tax invoice book. That’s about it really”. Really? Yes. Oh, and, “a couple of years ago I threw away the paper invoice book and started doing it on a computer.”
For Adam, business and accounts is like the project he doesn’t want to do. “I do it at the last minute,” he admits, “but I manage”. Luckily for him, setting up his own business was a lot easier than he’d anticipated. “I had my accountant set up Xtra Shiny Pty Ltd. Basically, I’m a sole trader. And if I need an extra set of hands, I subcontract for other people’s time. And that way, I just limit any of the overheads of having to pay staff and that sort of stuff.”
After quitting her previous job at the University, Jennie worked with photographer Andrew Dunbar whilst completing her study in commercial photography. She says it was a natural progression from working with an established photographer to going out alone. The business aspect of her work has always been in the background. “It’s not complicated,” Jennie assures me, “at least, I’ve never found it complicated”. Unlike Tom and Adam, Jennie is also supporting two young children. How does that feel? “I’m not really worried,” she admits. And she’s not. Jennie’s even looking at buying a house, “I’ve been able to save and prove to myself I can pay off a mortgage.”
Funnily enough, Adam isn’t worried about money either. Not even the thought of no company pension? “Nuh. I’m doing alright,” he says matter-of-factly. “At the end of the day, if you’re good at what you do, and you’re professional and respectable, you can get work. People will seek you out. And discerning people will look for an opportunity to do work with you”.
Keeping connected.
So – as long as you’re good – freelancing isn’t so much insecurity as it is flexibility. And, included underneath the flexible umbrella of freelancing are truly solo artists, and those who, although they work alone, are very much connected to their peers.
While the only producers’ ‘meeting’ Tom has attended was just a social accident (because he’s friends with other producers), as a photographer, Jennie expressed that keeping contact with her peers makes business sense. “There is the AIPP, the Australian Institute of Professional Photography, which has awards, promotional nights and seminar nights. To be part of a group is definitely important so you can meet up with people, interact and find out what they’re doing. Because when you’re working solo you don’t know if you’re doing it right, or if there’s a way of doing it faster. It’s really valuable to share knowledge and trade methods”.
Adam believes creative people need to interact with other creative people. The enemy of creativity is isolation. And while big advertising agencies have their own creative teams, the problem there is that, “it’s just as bad to be around the same creative people day in day out for years as it is to be (isolated), because you become institutionalised”. The advantage of freelance, then, is that you get to connect with new clients and influences all the time. This exposure means fresh feedback and, consequently, constant artistic development and stimulation. “It encourages you to be bold and take risks,” he says. Freelancing is creatively challenging and, “the more you challenge yourself,” says Adam, “the more inspired you are. You explore things you wouldn’t have otherwise have thought of.”
Setting yourself up.
As far as a workspace goes, Adam suggests getting yourself an office. “All of last year, I worked from home – and it was just doing my head in. I’d work all day, have dinner and then keep on working”. Even if it’s just a hole in the wall, an office can keep you productive. “I’m completely undisciplined,” Adam says, “but the second I get into the office, I’m working. If I’m faffing around, I feel guilty”. A workspace can also keep you sane. So now when it comes to 7pm, Adam gets to go home instead of remaining in a workplace he can’t escape.
But don’t get scared. For others, working from home is living the dream. Like Jennie, for example, “I had the experience with (my first child) working full time and mothering, you miss out on a whole chunk of time with your child when they’re in childcare.” She continues, “But this is really good, it’s kind of like working part time, but I work from home so I’m never far away”.
Recently, she was offered two jobs on the same night. One job was with a previous client, shooting Liza Minelli, and the other was with a new client – a job that paid a lot more money but had an unrealistic deadline. Jennie went with the previous client – even though it paid less – because, “they’re a good client”. Tom works directly with his clients, and people skills are key. Essentially, he says, “If you get along well with people they’ll like working with you and they’ll come back and employ you again”.
While Adam also has regular clients, paying the bills doesn’t mean sacrificing variety. “The type of work I do ranges from TV ads to packaging to architecture,” he says. “And I’m unrestricted in what I work on, because I set the rules for myself.”
Listening to these three successful freelancers talk about their careers, it’s not the image of a barren, lifeless and lonely desert that springs to mind. It’s an oasis – a creative paradise where you get to do what you want to do. True freedom – isn’t that what we all want?

9. Don’t skimp on equipment. Get the biggest, best and fastest because it makes your job a whole lot easier. It might cost more initially but will save time and increase your turnaround. If you can’t afford it, rent it.
10. Ask someone who’s been there before to catch up for a coffee and talk to you about the industry. Have good questions and make sure you do the listening. They’ll give you good advice and contacts.
